weather proofing a ping pong table

How To Weatherproof A Ping Pong Table DIY

You see raining outside over your one-year-old outdoor ping pong table and enjoy the rainy night with deep sleep.

The next day,  damn!

You are seeing some bumps on the surface of the table!

No, that was not supposed to happen.  You know that your table is staying on your yard for one year and it has dealt with all the rain, snow, humidity over the year and nothing happened to it till the last night’s rain.

So, what the hell was there in the rain of the last night?

My friend, there is nothing wrong with the rainwater, your table has just lost its weather protection. That’s all.

By the way, this article is not about fixing a damaged ping pong table.

Today’s article will feature only how to weatherproof a ping pong table to save it from the harsh surroundings.

Ways to Weatherproof Ping Pong Table Diy

For weatherproofing ping pong table, you may have to spend some money, but the increased longevity of the table will result in a better playing condition than playing on a damp one.

There are two ways to make a ping pong table weatherproof.

  1. The Temporary Solution
  2. The Permanent Solution

The Temporary Solution for Outdoor Weatherproof Ping Pong Table

If you want to take less time in making your table tennis table weatherproof, you can go with plastic sheets. Remember that this will not give your table long term protection from the sun and the snow.

Advantages

  • It cost a little.
  • It gives protection from rain, sun, snow, and dust.
  • Without much thinking about the cost, you can change it when it wears out.
  • The steps are easy to make a new one.
  • Instant protection from the rough weather.

Disadvantages

  • It is lightweight resulting in blown away by heavy wind.
  • It wears out quickly
  • Dust can enter if not covered properly.
  • Long term use can lead to mold formation resulted from low air passing.

Note: I will suggest using a poly sheet cover as ping pong table cover only when there is no other option. If you do not want to go for a permanent weatherproofing option, it is better to buy a ping pong table cover made of breathable fabric.

Things You Will Need to make a Flat Ping Pong Table Cover

  1. 4 mil Polysheet
  2. Measuring tapes
  3. Scissor
  4. Marker

How to Make A Flat Ping Pong Table Cover

Step 1: Measuring The Table and Necessary Poly Sheet

  1. The length of the table. The length of our table is 9 feet.
  2. The width of the table. The width of our table is 5 feet.
  3. The height of the table. The height of our table is 2 feet 6 inches.
  4. Measure the length of the net. The length of our table net is 6 feet.
  5. the height of the net. The length of our table net is 6 inches.

Now it’s time for determining the minimum length and minimum width of the plastic sheet.

The Minimum Length= {length of the table+(2xheight of the table)+height of the net}-(zero to 1 foot)

Example:

The length of Our table cover= {9 feet+ 2x(2 feet 6 inches)+ 6 inches}- 1 feet

=13 feet 6 inches

The Minimum width = {width  of the table+(2xheight of the net)}+(1 feet to 2 inches)

Example:

The width of Our table cover= {5 feet+ 2x(6 inches)}+ 1 feet

=7 feet

Step 2: Cut the Poly Sheet According to the Measurement

How you will cut the poly, it depends on the dimension of the sheet.

We have taken 10-feet by 25-feet plastic sheeting.

Mark the areas to cut with a marker. That will give you a clean cut.

Then we will cut a piece of 13 feet 6 inches length and width of 7 feet.

Now, you will get a rectangular sheet.

You can stop here and use it as a cover for your ping pong table but this has a huge disadvantage.

The 4 corners have a great possibility to touch the ground inappropriately. If that does bother you, go for Step 3.

Note:

We have taken a long sheet. So,  we do not need to attach sheets together. Somehow, you go for short ones, you may need to attach two or more sheets for the required dimension.

In that case, use Poly sheet Adhesive to attach

Step 3: Trim The Corners.

Before going with this part, cover your ping pong table with the cut sheet and check if the sheet is at a distance from the ground.

If not, follow this step.

Cut 6”x6” from each of the corners.

These trimmings will cut the excess sheet which is touching the ground.

Things You Will Need to Make an Upright Ping Pong Table Cover

  1. 4 mil Polysheet
  2. Measuring tapes
  3. Scissor
  4. Marker
  5. Poly sheet Adhesive

How to Make An Upright Ping Pong Table Cover

Step 1: Measuring The Folded Table and Necessary Poly Sheet

Fold your table at first.

Then start to measure

  1. The length of the table after folding. Suppose, the length is 5 feet.
  2. The height of the folded table with the legs. Suppose, the height is 6 feet.
  3. The highest width of the folded table. Suppose, the highest width is 1 foot 4 inches.

Now go for marking the length and width of the plastic sheet.

The Minimum Length of the cut fabric = (2xLength of the table)+(2xHighest width of the table)+4 inches

That is the minimum Length= (2×5 feet)+(2×1 foot 4 inches)+4 inches

= 13 feet

The Minimum width of the cut fabric = Height of the table+ Highest width of the table+2 inches

That is the minimum width= 6 feet+ 1 foot 4 inches+2 inches

= 7  feet 6 inches

Step 2: Cut the Poly Sheet According to the Measurement

Now take a marker and mark the edges according to the measurement.

And cut the plastic sheet to the marked area.

Try to keep a clean cut around the edges.

After cutting, you will get a 13 feet long cloth with a width of 7  feet 6 inches.

Step 3: Join the Edges

Fold the poly sheet width wise. Then join the edges with glue and now, the plastic sheet will look like a tube. Now, seal one of the open edges of the plastic sheet and it will look like a giant bag with no handle. That is your weatherproof ping pong table cover.

Wait, it doesn’t look so good,  right?

Yes, It doesn’t. So, to use it as a cover which looks good too, flip inside out of this giant bag.

If you have followed everything correctly, it will look awesome.

Note: These type of polysheet cover can be used for one season only. It is always advised to check for the hole and tear while covering the table because little hole can leak water and dust.

The Permanent Solution for Outdoor Weatherproof Ping Pong Table

If someone looks for permanent weatherproofing of a ping pong table, there are a limited number of options available.  Depending on the materials used in the table, the solutions vary.

Advantages:

  • It gives a foolproof protection against rain, moisture, sun and snow.
  • Protection duration is 1-2 years depending on the weather condition.

Disadvantages:

  • The cost of necessary products is high.
  • It is time consuming.

Note: When you do not have to use the ping pong table, use a cover.  It will enhance the durability of permanent protection.

How to Make a Ping Pong Table Waterproof Permanently?

To answer this question, we have to look over the construction materials of the ping pong table. Each manufacturer use individual raw materials for different parts and that determines what type of materials you will use and what procedures you will follow.

We know, Every ping pong table has mainly three parts.

  1. The table top
  2. The undercarriage
  3. The net

The net is always made of synthetic fiber which is rot-proof and strong. So, you do not have to particularly do anything to waterproof it.

Remaining two parts, the table top and undercarriage need proper moisture-proofing and waterproofing.

Waterproofing The Table Top

As the table top is made of plywood or fiberboard, it prones to rot and mildew catcher. Because of the same reason, it shows bumps or gets curved also.

So, a waterproof sealing with moisture proof formula can prolong the longevity of the table surface, though the seal will eventually wear off with time.

Things You Need for Waterproofing of Ping Pong Table Top

Here is the list-

  1. Polyurethane Sealer
  2. Brush
  3. Sand paper(100grit -150grit)
  4. Piece of fabric

Note:You can use other kind of sealer too but polyurethane sealer is more suitable. I would recommend to not use any water based sealer like acrylic type because there are pretty much differences between polyurethane sealer and acrylic sealer, that can affect the performance and longevity of you ping pong table.

Steps You Need To Follow

Step 1: Preparing the Table

Preparing of the table mainly includes cleaning the table. It is necessary to remove all the dirt and dust from the table surface. Otherwise the sealer won’t sit properly.

  1. Take out the net.
  2. Remove the dust by a mop or a cotton cloth. Anyway, a micro fibre cloth is the best option as it leaves the least scratch on the surface.
  3. Use your regular ping pong table cleaner to clean the table.

Note: If you do not have a cleaner. Make your own by using mild dish cleaner soap and water.  Damp a cloth with the cleaning solution and wipe the surface.

Step 2: Using Sealer on the Table

Sealer creates a barrier between the atmosphere and the ping pong table. As a result, moisture and water cannot enter into the woods. So, the table surface stay without getting bloated or damped.

Now, take your sealer and apply it on the table surface with a fine brush. In that case, some of you may not have experience in using a brush. So, my advice is –

  1. Dip the brush on the sealer.
  2. Get rid of the excess sealer by tapping it to the sealer jar to avoid dripping.
  3. Start from a corner and go along the edges at first.
  4. Flip the brush and follow the line in reverse.
  5. Follow step 1 and 2 when the brush start to drag. The frequency will depend on the sealer’s consistency .
  6. In the next step, take your brush further and try to make the next stroke blended with the former one along with keeping a horizontal line.
  7. Cover the entire table board (upper part and lower part) in the same way.
  8. Now keep the surface for natural drying. It will take 6-8 hours.

Note: Try not to stroke the brush randomly. Random strokes create a very uneven layers.

Step 3: Sanding the Table

After a complete drying of the sealer coat on the table, you have to even out the table surface by a sand paper.

Sanding is done to remove the uneven surface created from the uneven applying of the sealer. That also helps in creating bonds between the coats.

Perfect sanding comes from a lot of experience. If you have never done the sanding before, do not worry that much. There are some rules that you can follow.

  1. Check the most uneven and bumpy place of the coating. Try to look from a long angel. It will give you better point.
  2. Now, take a sand paper and start to rub the bumpy place with the coarse side of the paper.
  3. Maintain even pressure while rubbing.
  4. That’s how even out all the bumpy place.
  5. When you feel that all the uneven place are gone, give a final sanding through the whole surface.
  6. In that case, start from a corner.
  7. After the sanding, remove all the loose particles with a cleaning brush or hand vacuum.

Note: Always make sure the sealer of the surface is dry before sanding. Early sanding will damage the smoothness. Keep an eye on the over sanding, too, because it will remove the layer and the wood will be exposed.

Step 4: Repeating of Step-2 and Step-3

Sealer works best when several layers of sealer are there. To make the bond between the layers, sanding is done.

So, step 4 will involve again one coating of sealer and another round of sanding.

Follow all the procedures as the same as before.

Step 5: Final Sealing

The final coat of sealer is the most outer layer. So, you have to be over-careful about the smoothness while applying the sealer.

Make sure all the wood dust is removed completely.

Try to get a smooth finish of the sealer by gentle stroke of the brush. Do not over drag.

Step 6: Drying The Surface

For the drying of the final coat, 24 hours of drying is recommended before playing on the ping pong table.

Keep the table in well-ventilated room. Otherwise, it may take more time to dry.

Waterproofing The Undercarriage of Ping Pong Table

The undercarriage of the ping pong table determines how sturdy your ping pong table is. Because of the rough weather, sometimes rust forms on the legs and the frame of the ping pong table.

Modern outdoor tables are made as rust proof with aluminium coating over the steel.

However, the undercarriage of your ping pong table starts to show the flaky coating, know that the weather has taken over it. And, it is time to take care of it.

Things You Need for Weatherproofing The Undercarriage of Ping Pong Table

  1. Steel Bristle Brush
  2. Sand paper(220-320 grain)
  3. Rust Converter
  4. Safety Gloves
  5. Metal Primer
  6. Metal Paint
  7. Chip Brush
  8. Paint Brush

Steps You Need To Follow For The Undercarriage

Step 1: Cleaning with Bristle Brush

You have use Steel-bristle brush for cleaning the dirt and rust from the surface.

Use brushes of different sizes to reach every corner of the table legs.

Give close attention while cleaning the lower portion of the legs near the wheels.

Step 2: Sanding

Now you have to scrub the undercarriage surface with very fine sandpaper.

It will remove the former paints, debris and rust.

After sanding, make sure all the dust are removed before moving to the next step.

Step 3: Removing Sturdy Rust

If the table is heavily infected with rust, only sanding cannot remove it. In that case, you have to use a rust converter. You can search it by rust cleaner, too.

Rust converter neutralizes the surface and removes stubborn rust.

Follow the steps-

  1. At first, wear safety gloves and a mask because some rust cleaners are toxic.
  2. Take some cleaners in a bowl.
  3. Apply it with a brush.
  4. Leave for one day to work out the cleaner.

Note: Rust converter are pricey. If you do not want to invest in such a thing, rust converter come primer is a better option for you.

Two coats of it will work good and after full drying, you can jump to paint without doing other steps.

Step 4: Cleaning The Rust With A Brush

If you have followed step 3 properly, you will see the remaining rusts have become flaky.

Now take the steel-bristle brush again, and, clean off the surface.

Step 5: Use A Primer

Primer ensures double rustproof safety. It also helps in enhancing the color of final paint.

Apply it with a chip brush with gentle strokes. Try to make the layer as thin as possible.

Leave at 4 hours for drying or follow the direction of the manufacturers.

Apply the second coat and let it dry.

Step 6: Apply Paint

Choose a metal type paint for this.

Apply it with paint brush. The layer should be thin. Otherwise it will take an enormous amount of time to dry.

Use small size brush for the hard reachable parts like the joints of the wheel and corners of the frame.

Let It dry. After drying, give another layer of paint.
